My suggestions?

a) Take the SD1000. It's surely better than any digital camera from even a couple of years ago, and it's what you shoot that counts, not what you shoot it on.

b) Skip the Half Dome. Looks like a tourist trap, and anyway, it's a big enough deal doing the trail alone - the dome would just be a stale wafer in your ice cream after all that.

Half Dome might not be bad if you are there mid-week. That photo was taken on a Saturday. Here's a photo of the cables taken on a recent Friday: http://flic.kr/p/6GtFdZ and one from just last Monday: http://flic.kr/p/6Ka5bv . I'm guessing that you two are pretty fast hikers and will start really early. Could be worth it. The view is pretty awesome from the top.

Good luck! I'm heading out on the JMT towards the end of the month, and have enjoyed your posts and Flickr pics. I look forward to reading about your trip when we both get back - Anne
