Everything you read about the oil spill suggests it's going to be around for years to come, and that there's little to be done by you and me (other than writing a check). The volunteer opportunities are all seemingly full ("thanks, but we don't need anyone else at this time") and yet, we've got an ocean full of petrochemicals. It's discouraging.
But, this being a resourceful city, people have started taking matters into their own hands. Ad-hoc groups have started cleaning on their own with hairmats and kitty litter scoopers. A lot of this is being spearheaded by Surfrider members and other ocean-centric groups. Check Kill The Spill or Matter of Trust to find the next (un)official meet and cleanup.
