Top Seven is the new Top Eight. Huh? Let me explain.
You probably know the term top eight, but just in case: it's a reference to the eight friends displayed on your default MySpace profile. These are your so-called top eight, as they're the ones you've ranked highest so that you can quickly hit up their profiles and, well, because MySpace is really nothing more than one big popularity contest. Top Eight? Ghey. But whatever.
But there's a new "Top" list that actually has a bit more utility. That's the Top Seven. And what's that, you ask?
Simple, your top seven iPhone bookmarks.
That touchscreen keypad on the iPhone is pretty remarkable. Better than you expect, and you'll get faster on
it every day. Unless you're an idiot. But do you really want to key in iphoneapplicationlist.com every time you visit? No. You want to use a bookmark. It's much faster to just hit a bookmark: Two taps*, and you can launch a site in your top seven.
You can add as many bookmarks as you like, and you can re-order them as well. You can organize them in folders, and sub-folders, and generally arrange them however is most useful to you. But bookmarks nested in folders require more than one tap to get to, while any below your top seven sites require scrolling down. (There are actually eight slots in the screen, but the topmost one is a History folder, and you can't move it.) Simply put, the fastest way to get to a Web address is to put it in your top seven bookmarks. Any further than that, and it will require more tapping, scrolling or typing.
So it seems likely that, for convenience sake, sites that people visit most frequently are going to wind up in their Top Seven. And it's almost certainly destined to become shorthand for new sites du jour. As in: "Have you tried Pownce? Oh, man it's great. I've only been using it for two days, and already it's in my top seven." Or: "Seriously, I read your blog every day on my way to work. It's in my top seven."
Or maybe not, but it seems likely to me.
*That is, assuming Safari is already running. It's three taps from the home screen.
